(A hint, very soon you will hear yourself thinking ‘That’s obvious — where is he going’. Don’t get side-tracked by the thoughts you’re having, keep reading as if you’ve never seen or heard anything like this.)
A tool is an object used to extend the ability of an individual to modify features of the surrounding environment (according to Wikipedia).
‘Modify’ might mean to create, reshape or destroy an object, behavior, or point of view.
Let’s look at a chain saw.
A chain saw is used for particular purposes, mostly to cut wood. Sometimes a chain saw gets used for other purposes. I saw artists using a chain saw to create wood sculptures. Nevertheless, the use is making cuts in wood.
How do I learn to use a chain saw ?
First I get introduced to the chain saw or read the manual, learn about the different parts and how the parts work together, what each part contributes to the function of the chain saw.
At some point I start the chain saw and use the saw to cut the first piece of wood. Most likely an ‘easy to cut’ piece of wood to get to know what happens when I use the tool, to get the sensation of using the chain saw. Step by step in using the saw I learn about the function, the different ways of using the saw, the different purposes to be fulfilled, when and where to use the saw and when and where the saw is not at all a useful tool.
Sooner or later I discover the necessity for the chain saw to be maintained and learn the different levels of maintenance (daily, weekly, one every x month).
Over time I have become an expert in using the chain saw.
Being an expert in using the chain saw I train someone else to use the chain saw. That is my next level of learning. The one I train has questions I never asked, starts out with a different way of using the chain saw, uses the saw to fulfill on different purposes, etc. I’m exposed to a new experience and enhance what I learned.
After some time the one I just trained in using the chain saw becomes an expert too and starts training someone else.
I’m entering the next stage of learning to use a chain saw. I train the trainer, until all the questions of both the trainer and the new chain saw user have been answered.
I have mastered the chain saw, time to retire from the chain saw and start learning to use another tool.
What is described here is not a linear process. Of course, I start earlier with learning another tool, especially when I’m working in the wood trade. And the experience with the new tool will help me to become a master of the chain saw.
